27TH INAUGURAL CEREMONIES
March 4th, 1893
THE SWEARING-IN CEREMONIES
The Swearing-In Ceremony:
Grover Cleveland was sworn-in as the 24th President of the United States, and Adlai E. Stevenson was sworn-in as the 23rd Vice President of the United States. Because he served two non-consecutive terms, President Cleveland is referred to as the 22nd and 24th President of the United States.
East Portico, U.S. Capitol
Snow began during the early morning and ended around 1 p.m. One to two inches fell across the area. A biting wind blew from the northwest. The crowd was small for the Ceremony and many planned events were canceled. Estimated noon temperature of 25°F.
Bible provided by D. W. Middleton, Clerk of the Supreme Court, open to Psalm 118:11-13.
FACTS, FIRSTS, AND PRECEDENTS
Grover Cleveland is the only president to have served two non-consecutive terms, first in 1885 and again later in 1893. He is, therefore, referred to as the 22nd and 24th President of the United States.
