PRIVATE SWEARING-IN CEREMONY ON JANUARY 20
Because January 20, 1957 fell on a Sunday, the public Inaugural Ceremonies for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard M. Nixon were held on Monday, January 21. A private swearing-in ceremony was held in the East Room of the White House the day prior to fulfill the Constitution’s Twentieth Amendment, which dictates that “The terms of the President and the Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January…”
